Square, Almond or Coffin? Choosing the Right Nail Shape

The shape you choose changes how a set looks and how it survives your week — some shapes flatter shorter fingers, some need length to work, and some are simply stronger than others. Here's the honest guide we talk through at the salon.
The everyday workhorses
Square — straight sides, crisp corners — is bold and modern, and it's the classic canvas for French tips. It suits longer nail beds; on shorter nails it can look boxy.
Round and oval are the low-maintenance heroes: they mirror the finger's natural lines, resist snags, and make shorter fingers look longer. If your hands work hard — kids, keyboards, gardens — these shapes keep their looks longest.
Squoval (square with softened corners) is the best of both: the clean look of square without the sharp corners that catch on everything. It's our most recommended shape for first-time sets.
The statement shapes
Almond tapers to a soft peak and instantly elongates the hand — elegant, feminine and surprisingly practical at medium lengths. It's a beautiful match for BIAB and ombré work.
Coffin (or ballerina) tapers then squares off at the tip. It's the shape of Instagram — dramatic and flattering — but it wants length, which usually means acrylic or a longer BIAB set, and a little more care day-to-day.
Stiletto is the full statement: long, sharp and stunning for events. We'll be honest — it's the least practical shape for daily life, so many clients save it for occasions and wear almond in between.
How to actually decide
Match the shape to your life first and your Pinterest board second. Short natural nails? Round, oval or squoval. Want elegant length that survives work? Almond on BIAB. Full glamour for an event? Coffin or stiletto on a sculpted acrylic set — our technicians shape every set by hand, so bring a reference photo and we'll build it to suit your fingers.
